Disappointing & frustrating day for Hawks at Meggetland.

Bonus loss no consolation

Disappointing & frustrating day for Hawks at Meggetland.

Hawks opened this important BT Premiership fixture in a positive mood, dominating possession and territory and after 15 minutes got their reward as following a penalty Hawks went for the lineout and the powerplay was on.
3 phases later and Tom Steven stretched out an arm and got the touchdown right in the corner. 5 – 0 to Hawks.

Things were looking positive for Hawks but Boroughmuir fought back and 5 minutes later got their reward with a 3 point penalty kick to open their account.

Indeed Boroughmuir pressed on, without any great line breaks but a penalty award on the 32 minute mark saw them take the lead. 6 – 5.

Half time arrived without any further scoring.

The second half resumed with Hawks having the benefit of the deceptively strong breeze broadly behind them and piled on the pressure.

They were rewarded within 5 minutes as George Horne picked from the base of a ruck just a couple of metres out and found the space to wriggle over for the converted try. Hawks 12 – Boroughmuir 6.

The next 25 minutes saw Hawks have a number of kickable penalty opportunities but declined them all for the lineout kick and potential drive for the line, and some lenient officiating towards the home side who appeared to be repeat offenders but no sanction displayed.
This was to prove costly for Hawks as chance after chance was lost for a variety of reasons but eventually you knew Boroughmuir would have at least a couple of forays into Hawks territory and potential chances to score.
Indeed on one of their few forays into Hawks territory Boroughmuir capitalised and drove a maul for the line. The first time it was deemed to have been held up but a penalty was awarded and Hawks 2nd Row Jonathan Agnew was Yellow carded.
Boroughmuir got the converted try at the second time of asking. 13 – 12 to Boroughmuir.

Boroughmuir took the inspiration and the extra man to drive deep into Hawks 22 and the ensuing penalty kick saw them stretch their lead to 4 points. 16 – 12.

Hawks were up against it now but recovered to win a penalty with only a couple of minutes to go and elected to kick for goal to close the gap to one point. 16 – 15.

In the final minute it was suddenly all action as Hawks looked to force the play downfield but they couldn’t make the crucial break or force the crucial penalty and Boroughmuir held out for the victory.

From a Hawks perspective, this was a deeply frustrating loss as Hawks were clearly the better team but didn’t take the appropriate opportunities when they presented themselves through good play and Boroughmuirs’ indiscretions.

Well done to Boroughmuir they took their chances when they came.
