Hawks took a massive step up in the league today as the beat Edinburgh Accies at Raeburn Place and pulled themselves away from 9th spot.

The weather had meant that the team had not played since they had beaten Melrose in the Scottish Cup. As other teams had fulfilled their fixtures the Glasgow side had only been able to watch as they slid down the table as other sides were able to play.

But today’s win against the bottom side not only took Hawks to 7th place but left the side from Raeburn Place, virtually certain to go down in 10th spot.

Both sets of supporters knew exactly what was at stake today and a small but noisy group had travelled through to lend voice to the Glasgow side’s efforts.

Accies had most of the early possession and Jamie Farndale was unlucky to miss with a straightforward penalty attempt in 7 minutes and it was a sign of the difficulty Accies were to have getting anything on the scoreboard.

Early play saw the Hawks pack try to take their opposite numbers on but when the opening score came it was against the run of play.
Accies were putting a series of phases together as Hawks Neil Herron read a pass and intercepted the ball. He burst through just inside the home half. The open field of Raeburn Place opened up before him and he raced through for the opening try, running almost 50 metres. With George Horne stepping up for an easy conversion Hawks were ahead on 15 minutes. (0-7)

Hawks then went down to 14 as Tommy Spinks received a Yellow Card and it was a testament to Hawks’ outstanding defence that Accies despite asserting themselves on the match were unable to score as Farndale missed another penalty.

In 33 minutes it was now home prop Liam Launders turn to see Yellow and take a ten minute break.

Ironically, Accies scored when they were short-handed when this time Accies winger, Callum Ramm, broke from deep and ran in for a solo effort. Farndale secured the extras and despite Hawks having a man advantage the scores were tied. (7-7)

Hawks started to put on the pressure and were rewarded with a 39th minute penalty which Horne despatched with ease. Within a minute they were back in Accies’ 22 and forced another penalty as Accies hooker Michael lines was sent to the sin-bin. Hawks were up by 6 points at the turn. (7-13)

Hawk started the half hammering home their advantage in numbers and the four props, Steven Findlay, Brendan Cullinane, Zander Fagerson and Gary Strain were immense as the took it in turns to torment their opposite numbers.

A couple of tremendous scrums in the home 5 metre, saw the Referee award a penalty try in 52 minutes which Horne converted. (7-20)

With Horne then breaking away in 72 minutes for the third try, which he goaled, it was an emphatic win for Hawks but there were signs of “ring rustiness” and the players said as much as that after the game, as the disjointed, weather affected month had taken it’s toll. (7-27)
