Former Hawks scrum half does a Chris Froome

Just a quick email to say thanks for your very kind donation to my JustGiving page. I’m delighted to tell you I’ve raised £6,500 for Maggies, Edinburgh and I’ve been overwhelmed by the donations and messages of support from everyone.

I’m delighted to tell you that I managed to complete the cycle from Barcelona to Biarritz. It’s probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done both mentally and physically. The sense of joy I experienced when I arrived in Biarritz was amazing. It’s safe to say I’ve not been back on my bike since I got back but think I’ll go for a spin in the next week or two! The views across the Pyrenees were spectacular and we even spent a day in Andorra. If you have been watching any of the tour De France we cycled the route of stage 11 which included the Col de Tourmalet (18km uphill!) which I think took me an hour longer than Chris Froome!

I composed this email whilst I was in hospital 2 weeks ago, getting my radioactive Iodine treatment. I’m pleased to let you know that it was a success and despite feeling tired, I had no other problems. I’ve waited till now to send this email as yesterday I received great news that the cancer hasn't spread to any other part of my body. This means that the treatment was a success and apart form regular monitoring I am essentially cured. It has been some journey over the last six months. Your donations and messages of support gave me the motivation to get back on the bike each day of the trip! I’ve attached a few photos from the end of the trip and I hope you’re able to see them.

I have spoken to the folk at Maggie’s and the money I’ve raised will go to the general pot. As i said to them they know best where to spend the money and look forward to hearing what the money goes towards. I have said before and I’ll say it again, they are an amazing organisation and as many people have said to me, they have found them helpful when they or others they know have had similar problems to mine.

Once again thank you for your donation, and hopefully I’ll see you soon for a beer or two….

All the best
Stephen Biggart
