Match Report by: Alan Robertson

In their penultimate league game in West 1 of the BT Regional Leagues Annan travelled to Glasgow on Saturday. With Glasgow Accies currently sitting in 3rd place and Annan propping up the league and with Accies beating Annan at Violetbank 32 – 13 in November even the most ardent Annan supporter was not looking forward to what awaited their team at New Anniesland.

Their fears looked to be well founded when within the first two minutes the Accies backs cleaved through the visitor’s defence with consummate ease for their winger to score in the corner. The Annan forwards were also having a torrid time in the scrums where they lost three strikes against the head and were eventually penalised and Accies increased their lead to 8-0.

In the second quarter Annan at last drove play into the home half and in a fine sustained attack between forwards and backs centre David Wyllie crashed over the whitewash to score an unconverted try. With some changes in the Annan scrum the Annan forwards began to dominate the set piece play both in scrummage and lineout but it was the hosts who added to their score before half time with a penalty awarded for an offence at a ruck.

Half Time Score: Glasgow Accies 11 v Annan 5

Having played into the teeth of a gale in the first half Annan were looking forward to utilising it in the second half but inexplicably the wind died. Annan however did reduce the deficit when stand off Craig McCann slotted a penalty minutes into the half to reduce Accies lead to 3 points.

Accies increased their lead however when their outside centre, who was a thorn in Annan’s side for the entire game, broke through Annan’s mid field defences and set his right winger down the touchline to score a fine try which was duly converted to take the hosts into a 10 point lead.

Annan’s forwards were beginning to gain the upper hand in the set piece and in the loose and made inroads into Accies territory in several drives. No 8 Sean Haren, back playing in his favoured position after filling in at centre for several games, had several breenging runs from pickups at the base of the scrums and it was only a matter of time before he blasted over to score. McCann added the extras.

Annan were unlucky not to add to their score as they disrupted the Accies scrum with their front row standing up on each occasion but no penalties were forthcoming. Alas time ran out for the visitors and they were left again to rue missed chances.

Final Score: Glasgow Accies 18 v Annan 15.

This was a game that was full of drive and passion for the Annan squad especially against a team that has given them a torrid time in the past at New Anniesland.
