Match report for Accies v St Boswells

IN ORDER TO SUCCEED YOU FIRST OF ALL MUST BELIEVE YOU CAN
It has to be said that most supporters looked at the size of the opposition today and felt that Accies were going to have to be totally committed and at their best to get something out of this match against the team sitting third in the league.
Accies have demonstrated in the last two games that they can score tries although that was against two sides struggling this season, so today was clearly going to be a far tougher test and from the kick off you could tell they were clearly up for the task. Good forward momentum took the ball to the opposition and some quick passing and aggressive running took Accies into the St Boswell’s 22. Accies were looking very comfortable on the ball and when the ball was recycled quickly, a beautiful piece of work between Stewart Gray and the returning Ross Cowan created a gap which scrum half Josh Waldin burst through to score beside the posts and Stewart Gray duly converted.

4 minutes gone and Accies were ahead 7 – 0
St Boswell’s stand-off was clearly intent on gaining ground by using his boot, however Accies back 3 were well up to it and even returned one of these kicks and had it not been for a half foot in touch Ross Cowan would have been in for the second try.
The second try was not far away however as some really good work at a lineout produced a gap and the ever present open side wing forward Hugh Lindsay romped in from 20 meters out to score.

Unfortunately the conversion just passed the left hand post. 12 – 0
St. Boswell were not going to sit back and let Accies do what they wanted and with hard running from their forwards and big backs, all running down the number 10 channel, they worked their way into Accies half where a penalty was awarded for the tackler not releasing the player and their number 10 converted 12 – 3
This was followed with another penalty and that was also converted 12 -6
The confidence in the stand had been high, but the two penalties had slightly dented it and with the first half coming to an end another penalty was awarded, this time 8 meters inside St Boswell's own half, but their stand-off had loads of confidence with his distance and attempted the kick. It proved too far and the first half came to an end.
Half-time 12 – 6

It had been a sterling effort in the first half from Accies and the strong support were hoping that Accies could keep up their momentum. Well very quickly it was evident that Accies were full of confidence and were working the ball through hard running from the forwards and great running and handling from the backs. It was from some great work at the breakdown and superb running by the backs that put Kris Mathie clear and he ran fully 40 metres to score under the posts.

Stewart duly converted to make it 19 – 6

Hardly had the supporters settled down in the stand, than some great running from Ross Cowan put him clear and with Josh Waldin up in support, Ross’s pass was timed to perfection and Josh ran in for the bonus point try. 26 – 6
Accies were not going to let up and with forceful defence and strong running were quickly back into St Boswell’s 22. From some quick ball after a line out and ruck once again Josh Waldin, who it has to be said was having a dream day, romped through a big gap to score his third and Accies fifth try.

Another successful conversion 33 – 6.

Accies did take their foot off the peddle and St Boswell had their best 15 minutes of the game. Despite some superb Accies defence the ball ran for St Boswell and they scored 2 tries. One of which was converted. 33 – 18.
With time running out an alert Ker Malcolm saw the interception and ran in from halfway to score under the posts.

The conversion made the final score 40 – 18.

This was most definitely a 15 man effort. The front row of Jason Currie, Greg Valentine and Josh Scott more than held their own in the scrums against some very big opposition as well as doing their bit in defence, the work horses in the second row were tireless in defence and attack and even taking opposition ball at some lineouts. It is a pleasure to watch this Accies back row who work have worked their way into a superb unit, tackling everything and proving to be a real threat in attack.
The back division were clearly on form and with few if any handling mistakes they are being controlled by halfbacks who seem comfortable with the game plan. They are a joy to watch with crisp handling and hard running.
