Scots look to build on win over England

Scotland under-20 started their Six Nations campaign by coming out trumps in an intense and physical battle against England at Broadwood Stadium.

The home side made history in the process, becoming the first Scotland team to defeat England at under-20 level, with an emphatic 24-6 victory.

The side, led by captain Scott Cummings, crossed the whitewash on four occasions and managed to nil England, who have claimed the Championship title four times in the last five years.

Cummings, who scored the third of Scotland’s four tries, said: “For me, the result was the highlight of my season so far. Getting my first cap for Glasgow was a huge and overwhelming experience, but to beat England was incredible; that’s what you play rugby for.

“Performances like the one against England is what we, as a squad, want going forward.

“All credit to England, they were incredibly tough to play against, and it was a physical battle, but we’re really happy to come out on top.”

However, the Glasgow Hawks lock was keen to acknowledge that the opening victory was a building block in terms of the Championship, and that travelling to Wales presents a difficult task for the young Scots.

Cummings started at lock in Scotland under-20’s, 36-34, defeat of their Welsh counterparts in last year’s Championship, and is aware of the tough test they’ll pose in round two of this year’s fixtures.

“Wales will present another huge challenge this weekend. They’re going to be a big and physical outfit, who will bring a lot of intensity,” he continued.

“Over the last couple of years we’ve been slowly building, and this year we’ve got an extremely strong squad for the Championship, but we need to keep improving.

“However, if we want to get the result down there, then we need to refocus and put in an even bigger performance than we did against England.”

Scotland under-20’s game against Wales under-20 on Friday night will be live broadcast on S4C from 6pm.
