Big Cup weekend

Club rugby returns this weekend with the penultimate round of the BT Cup, Shield and Bowl competitions.

In the semi-finals of the top-tier competition, defending champions Heriot’s travel to play Hawick at Mansfield Park (kick-off 3pm), while last year’s runners-up Glasgow Hawks host Boroughmuir at Old Anniesland (kick-off 3.30 pm)

Hawick Head Coach Nikki Walker said: “Everyone is buzzing to play in a Cup semi-final and want to try to get the club to the final for the first time in over 10 years.

We can’t underestimate our opposition though as they will have their eyes on the double, being the only team to have beat us in both home and away league games this season and they deservedly sit top of the table.”

The Cup match in Glasgow will be the second part of a double header, as GHK take on Orkney in the BT Shield semi-final at Old Anniesland. This game will kick-off at 1pm.

Glasgow Hawks Coach Peter Laverie said: “Boroughmuir were our last opponents and they pipped us at the post with a last minute kick to claim the points in the league match.

“Our players are very keen to get their own back in what is a major game for both clubs and the splendid prize of a final place on the international pitch at BT Murrayfield in April.

“Our training sessions have been very competitive and intense over the last ten days with everyone desperate to put their hands up for selection, and there is no doubt in the coaches' minds that our lot are up for it.

The adage that: 'no one remembers a losing semi-finalist,' is very true so we must focus on doing the basics of the game well and putting in a performance in order to win tomorrow.”

The other BT Shield game will be played between St Boswells and North Berwick at Jenny Moore’s Field, in the Borders, at 2.30pm.

Finally, Alloa and Kinloss Eagles will meet at Earlsfield and Cumnock will host Ross High at Broomfield House. These BT Bowl matches commence at 3pm.

One rearranged BT Premiership match will also be played tomorrow, at 3pm, when third placed Ayr travel to Malleny Park to take-on Currie, who currently sit in sixth.

The semi-finals for the Sarah Beaney Cup have also been drawn this week and will be played on Sunday 29 March.

Women’s BT Premier League champions, Murrayfield Wanderers will play Aberdeenshire Quines or Stirling County at BT Murrayfield, while Cartha Queen’s Park will welcome Hillhead Jordanhill or Melrose to Dumbreck Road that day.
