Gary Heatly reports

MUSSELBURGH caused the big shock of the day by defeating Peebles 47-8.

The East Lothian side, under the captaincy of Neil McNairn, have been in good form of late to keep themselves firmly in the BT National League Two title race, winning their last five league matches and having scored 89 points last week.

However, nobody could have predicted that they would see off Peebles, from the division above them, so comfortably at Stoneyhill.

Musselburgh were leading 27-8 at the interval and they did not let up in the second half against their shell-shocked visitors.

Twenty further points came from the hosts in the second 40 minutes and they will be in the draw for round three.

Teenagers Euan McKirdy and Nigel Kelly grabbed their top-team chance with both hands in the BT Cup yesterday as GHA edged out Selkirk 20-17 in round two. The hosts had used the tie at Braidholm to give a few young fringe players a chance in the first XV and they did very well.

McKirdy, Kelly and the more experienced Rangi Jericevich bagged tries to see them tied 17-17 with their visitors.

A late penalty then won it for them and it inflicted the first defeat of the campaign on their BT National League One title rivals.

Boroughmuir edged out Stewart’s Melville 15-13 at Inverleith, Hawick were in good form to win 55-17 away to Marr, Edinburgh Accies saw off Jed-Forest 49-13 and Currie beat Dundee HSFP 29-12.

Kelso had to battle hard to defeat Preston Lodge, from two divisions below them, 27-23 at Poynder Park while Stirling County got the better of local rivals Falkirk 25-3.

Hamilton saw off Aberdeen Grammar 48-41 and Howe of Fife beat Whitecraigs 27-0.

The Hawick YM-Lasswade tie did not go ahead and looks set to be replayed while Glasgow Hawks saw off Watsonians 39-15 on Friday night.
