GHK v Cumbernauld BT West Region Shield – quarter final 8 November 2014
The other All Blacks visited OA on Saturday as Cumbernauld RFC met GHK in the BT Shield. The home starting XV that took to the field showed several changes from the squad which had dismantled Helensburgh seven days earlier.
GHK got off to a bright start and a Jamie McLean try from a charge down opened the scoring. Cumbernauld hit back drawing level with a cracking try, run in from about sixty metres, demonstrating that they carried a bit of menace behind the scrum and were capable of asking questions of the GHK defence.
Possession was quite evenly shared but GHK probably did things that little bit quicker and were a bit more effective in use of the ball. The sight of a Brazilian on the charge usually quickens the pulse and Lucas rarely disappoints. A surging burst from inside his own twenty two was one of a number of highlights and it was the South American that restored the GHK lead with a try from a Mike Aird break on the quarter hour.
A Cumbernauld penalty attempt fell just short and moments later GHK put distance between themselves and their visitors with what some in the crowd were calling the try of the season. From a break deep within their own twenty two, Adam Johnston carried on feeding Hugh Parker. The man himself demonstrated power, speed and skill as he broke through tackles, outpaced the defence and served up a magnificent dummy before gently offloading to Jamie McLean to touch down by the posts.
Ben Farmer replaced hooker Kieron Boles who had sustained a gash to the head. The amount of blood was significant and KB was escorted to hospital by Mike Borthwick in what was his good deed for the day. Further tries by Hugh Parker and Scott Davidson saw GHK get to half time with a comfortable 33-5 lead.
The second half was played in constant heavy rain and that may have dampened the spirits of both sets of players. Cumbernauld showed a few smart touches in the backs and it could be seen why their results of late have got them moving up in League 2. However, GHK were always the more likely to add to their tally of points and further second half scores from Scott Davidson and that man Parker again put the result well out of sight. Scott Robertson kicked well converting five of the seven tries some from way out wide.
Final score GHK 45 Cumbernauld 5
A game played in excellent spirit watched by a decent crowd. The fact that so many players, be they injured, rested, rotated or just confused, turned up to support the players who took to the field was much appreciated. Well done guys – good to see.
Fine performances from a number of GHK players – Lewis Brock and Jamie McLean were particularly prominent. Rory Long gave an assured display. Scott Davidson was a threat as was centre Scott Robertson. However, for two tries and a glorious assist, the GHK man of the match is Hugh Parker. A man returning to his best form.
