Apologies that, due to the unavailability of our top team of reporters, (!) we are unable to bring you a full report on what was clearly an excellent win for GHK in the BT National League Cup tie against Biggar at Burnbrae in the big Friday Night Lights Game.

Following a recent 36-28 home defeat to Biggar in the league, the margin of GHK’s win was perhaps surprising but the sequence of scoring suggests that GHK were always in control of the game. First half tries from Cammy Hughes on his return to the 1st XV after injury, with further counters from Mark Smyth and Danny Campbell, both collecting the first of what would turn out to be a double for Mark and a treble for Danny, with all three converted by Campbell, gave GHK a lead of 21-3 at half time after going behind to an early Biggar penalty.

Biggar’s hopes may have been briefly raised as they scored first in the second half to bring the score to 21-10 but Smyth bagged his second before Campbell struck from far out to restore GHK’s lead to a more comfortable 31-10.

A cross kick from Biggar brought about their final try before GHK captain Hugh Parker got his name on the try scoring list leaving Danny Campbell to complete his hat trick to make the final score GHK 43 Biggar 15.

This win takes GHK through to the quarter finals of the BT National League Cup, a new competition this season. They will now face one of the following, with the games scheduled for 10th February, for a place in the semi finals:

Stewart’s Melville, Dumfries, GHA, Highland, Kelso, St Boswells or Peebles.

We will, of course bring you news of the draw as soon as it’s available.

Meanwhile GHK’s teams have another week off next week as the Autumn internationals are completed before the 1st and 2nd XVs both head to Dumfries for important and testing league fixtures on 2nd December.
