Saturday 9 April

Or is it a ‘Promotion Celebration Champagne Lunch or even a ‘Lunch Celebration Champagne Promotion?

Whatever way you put it, to celebrate the fact that both GHK and West of Scotland have achieved promotion from BT National Division 3 to National 2 next season, we’re having a celebratory lunch at Old Anniesland on Saturday 9th April when the sides will play their rearranged league fixture, postponed from the one snowy Saturday in January.

The fact that the game wasn’t able to go ahead that day didn’t deter the followers of both clubs from having a tremendously enjoyable lunch when we were all entertained by no fewer than three presidents with Alan Sneddon from West and Glenn Woolard of GHK being joined by SRU President Eddie Crozier – each in their own inimitable manner!

We are offering a two course lunch, with a 1200 start, including champagne on arrival for only £20. As this event is likely to be very popular, places should be booked without delay by contacting John Anderson at j.anderson@frenchduncan.co.uk.

With the spring weather being so much more reliable(!) we can look forward to the prospect of not one, but two, thrilling matches on the day as the 1st and 2nd XVs of both clubs meet in a ‘double header’ on the Main Pitch at OA. Although both 1st XVs have earned promotion there is still a lot to play for as GHK strive to keep their unbeaten league record going and West seek to overturn the very narrow (some might say undeserved) defeat they suffered in the reverse fixture at Burnbrae.

Some might also argue that the 2nd XV fixture is of even greater importance as GHK, although leading the league having played more games than West, suffered their only defeat this season in the game at West. It’s likely, therefore, that this game will decide which of the clubs wins the West Regional Reserve League One and gains the one promotion place on offer to the National Reserve leagues. Exciting times indeed!
