Melrose at home on 3rd January

Glasgow Hawks face a tough tie in the BT Cup 3rd round having drawn League Champions, Melrose.

The tie will be the West End club’s first fixture of 2015 as they welcome the Border club to “first foot” them at Old Anniesland. Hawks will be hoping to give Rose a warm welcome into the New Year as they try to reach the cup final for the second year in succession. Hawks beat Watsonians 39-15 in the 2nd round

Coach Jamie Dempsey said, “We reached the final of the cup in a slightly different format beating Ayr and Gala, who were in the top four in the league last season, before we lost out to Heriot’s in the final. The lads definitely got a taste for the big occasion and are keen to go that bit further this season especially now that the Final is back at BT Murrayfield.

“It will be a difficult tie and Melrose were the only side in the top four we didn’t play in the cup last time, but if we want to reach the final we’ll have to face down the top clubs.”

The match should be competitive as both sides have lost in the last two finals and the players will be keen to get to the final and make amends. The match will be played on Saturday the 3rd of January with the kick off to be announced.

Borders opposition will also be visiting the West End in the equivalent women’s trophy, the Sarah Beaney Cup, which sees Hillhead-Jordanhill drawn against Melrose in the quarter final at Hughenden. This encounter involves another one of last season’s finalists as Melrose were runners-up to Murrayfield Wanderers and Hills have a challenge to get to the semi-final. This match will take place on Sunday the 18th of January.

Another highlight from today’s draw are a west coast derby between BT National League Division 2 side, Hamilton (who upset Aberdeen Grammar in round two, 48-41) and have drawn current BT Premiership leaders Ayr.

Scottish Rugby’s Head of Club Services, Nick Rennie, said: “Glancing at the draw we have some cracking ties and local derbies to bring in the New Year.”
