Former Hawk Colin calls time

Scotland 7s winger Colin Shaw has today confirmed his retirement from professional rugby.

In his career Shaw had stints with Scotland 7s, making his debut at the 2008 George 7s in South Africa, and Glasgow Warriors. With
the abbreviated national team he won 36 HSBC Sevens World Series caps, scoring 44 tries, and played in two Rugby World Cup 7s (Dubai 2009 and Moscow 2013) and two Commonwealth Games (Delhi 2010 and Glasgow 2014).

Shaw also featured in the Scottish Thistles team that won the Melrose Sevens on its 125th anniversary in 2008.

In the XV-a-side game he played 71 times for Glasgow Warriors and won two caps for Scotland A. He had a try-scoring debut against Gloucester in a pre-season warm-up game at Kingsholm Park in 2003, before making his Celtic League debut against Cardiff in November 2004.

He said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute with the different teams I have been with in my career.

It has been an honour to play for Scotland 7s and Glasgow Warriors and the respective coaches I’ve worked with.

“There are too many highlights to count, but the most recent one was being selected for the home Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last summer and my first XV-a-side game with Glasgow against Cardiff is still clear in my mind.

“Sevens is a great game, which is on the up, particularly with the new HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series venues.

The open space that you are presented with in sevens, and the pace of the game and skills involved makes it a unique and I have been lucky to play a part in that.

“I have no immediate plans to play club rugby, but I have been afforded the opportunity to work with Harry Fairbairn BMW in Giffnock, so I’m concentrating on that just now and I am enjoying the down time too.

“Thank you to all the coaches, physios, doctors, backroom staff and my agents, Top Marque Sports as well.

“Special thanks to my Mum, Dad, little sister, Alyson and wife, Hope for all their support throughout the past 12 years.

“I look forward to the future with a challenging and exciting new career and family life ahead with Hope and new son, Ethan.”
