This Saturday it’s off to Milngavie

This week Hawks peripatetic status continues with the home match against STIRLING County being played at Burnbrae the home of West of Scotland FC
The fortunes of West and our founder clubs Glasgow Accies and GHK have been intertwined since 1865
Several of the founding fathers of West were Glasgow Accies — these two football clubs being the oldest in Glasgow .When the concept now known as the 1872 Cup was born at Burnbank the Glasgow XX that faced Edinburgh comprised of 19 players from these two clubs plus a player from Glasgow University J.W Reid
For the first 80 years of their existence West played at historic Hamilton Crescent the birthplace of international soccer where a week after the first Inter City Queens Park FC (celebrating its 150th birthday this year) faced England .The old ground is still home to West of Scotland Cricket Club

During the early years of West several of their international players were former pupils of Glasgow High School like H.M .Napier and a T G Connell who ran 51.2 S for 440 yds not bad for a rugby player back in 1884 in fact still not bad in 2017

Another of their famous personalities was a Kelvinside Accie Crawford Findlay who refereed the first international between Ireland and New Zealand in 1905 and negotiated the use of Hampden Park for Glasgow’s match against The Originals on that historic first tour by the All Blacks

Following WW2 West was evicted from their home since 1865 and became nomadic For the first few years they combined with Kelvinside Accies and played at Balgray but from the early 1950s played home matches wherever they could find pitches but the majority were at Old Anniesland with some at New Anniesland

After a decade of huge endeavour they acquired ground in Milngavie and laid out pitches
The first pitch into use was the roadside pitch now the car park of Waitrose
In recognition of the support of Glasgow High they were asked to be the opposition for the first match at Burnbrae on 17th September 1960
The honour of scoring the first try on the new ground went to Percy Friebe who is now the Honorary President of GHK

Hawks are most grateful to President Allen Snedden ,Vice President Ian McDiarmid and West of Scotland F.C for their use of facilities and their support

More match details regarding arrangements will be posted later in the week
