Coach Dempsey welcomes draft

Hawks welcome SRU draft

Glasgow Hawks coach reacted positively to the news of the SRU draft of Glasgow Warriors pro-players. Amongst those assigned to Hawks is Warriors’ captain and Scottish Internationalist Ally Kellock.

Hawks coach, Jamie Dempsey said “The draft has been excellent for us. To have the chance to select Ally Kelllock was fabulous. We have a number of young locks, like Scott Cummings and Andrew Davidson, in the squad and even if Ally was to work with them a couple of times it would be a positive step in their development.”

As well as Kellock the draft includes, Alex Dunbar, Colin Gregor, Tyrone Holmes, Peter Horne, Mark Bennett, Gordon Reid, Sean Lamont, Chris Fusaro, Euan Murray and Niko Matawalu.

“Obviously, we expect a number of the players to be playing regularly for the Warriors when fit but there is a lot of quality in the draft.”

Scottish Internationalist prop, Euan Murray has returned to Glasgow after a few seasons roaming the country and his fellow prop Gordon Reid is a big favourite of Warriors fans. Former West player, Peter Horne is in the draft and former Cumnock player Mark Bennett gives a distinctly west-coast feel to the draft. South African back-row, Tyrone Holmes returns having played a number of times for Hawks last season including in the Scottish Cup Final.

“Tyrone was popular here last season as he put in a couple of great shifts for us. He leaves nothing on the park and is an impressive presence at training. Hopefully we’ll get the chance to see Niko at some point, he certainly lights the crowd up at Scotstoun and it would be great if he could entertain the Hawks’ support. We drafted Leone Nakawara last season and he was very popular always want to make the break, imagine Niko bursting out Fijian style on the new pitch at Old Anniesland. It would be a sight to behold.”
