Bonus win

A young Hawks second team (with 7of the squad from last seasons U18s), out played their Borders counterparts in all areas of the game on a glorious warm, sunny afternoon at OA. It only took the Seconds 10 minutes to breakdown the Storms defence to score their opening try. Sustained pressure from a driving maul off lineout ball resulted in Peter Redmayne, on his first outing following injury, to crash over the line to score the first of 5 Hawks tries. Unfortunately, the conversion was missed by Stephen Gillies. Hawks 2nds 5 v 0 Melrose Storm

Hawks continued to dominate their opponents, but a combination of scrambled defence from Melrose or the final pass going to ground meant it was another 19 minutes before Hawks scored their second try of the game. Again sustained pressure from the forwards, resulted in Zander Fagerson crashing over the line. Stephen Gillies added the extra 2 points to make the score Hawks 2nds 12 v 0 Melrose Storm

A further period of sustained pressure from Hawks, and scrambled defence by Storm, meant that Hawks would only add a further 3 points to their score before half time. This was from a penalty converted by Stephen Gillies in the 35th minute. Half time score Hawks 2nds 15 - 0 Melrose Storm.

The second half started the same way as the first, with Hawks continuing to dominate the play, but silly errors resulting in moves ending with no scores. In 51 minutes, Hawks scored their third try of the game. This was from a passage of play involving the forwards and backs moving the ball fast from a ruck after a successful lineout. The quick ball allowed Stephen Leckey to score in the corner. Unfortunately, Stephen Gillies missed the conversion. Hawks 2nds 20 - 0 Melrose Storm

Melrose Storm then came back into the game and put Hawks under a little pressure. However, Hawks defence held out. Then in the 63rd minute, from a successful turnover deep in their own 22, Hawks won the ball back. The ball was moved quickly from the turnover, down the blind side for Brendon McGroarty to make a 40 metre gain before off loading the ball to Euan Milligan, who ran in from 30 metres to score under the posts. The extra 2 points were added by Stephen Gillies. Hawks 27 - 0 Melrose Storm.

Then in the 77th minute, Hawks seemed to switch off, which allowed Melrose to break Hawks defence and score a try against the run of play. The conversion was missed. Hawks 2nds 27 - 5 Melrose Storm.

Hawks were not finished scoring. From the kick off following Storms try, Hawks won a penalty for Storm holding on in the contact area. Hawks elected to kick for the corner. From the successful lineout, the forwards secured a good driving maul, which allowed Callum Kerr to score in the corner. With the last kick of the game, Stephen Gillies was unsuccessful with the conversation. Final score, Hawks 2nds 32 v 5 Melrose Storm.
