Hooker Jonny Spence cannot wait to lead Glasgow University into the BUCS Trophy final on Wednesday against Edinburgh University.

The match is part of ‘BUCS Big Wednesday’ where various finals in various different sports take place at the University of Bath.

The match kicks off at 11am and Glasgow are 80 minutes away from lifting their first BUCS Trophy.

After successfully winning the Scottish 1A league, the boys in black and gold will want to put their Glasgow Cup defeat to Strathclyde last week behind them, turning their attention towards this match and a possible second trophy of 2016/17.

Glasgow Captain Jonny grew up playing rugby at Ballymena Academy and then progressed on to the men’s team at Ballymena RFC.

“I then joined GURFC immediately upon arriving at university and have played some club rugby at Glasgow Hawks too, however my main focus has always been on the uni team,” the 22-year-old said.

“Rugby is a great form of camaraderie.

“What’s so enjoyable about uni rugby is that you get to play, train and go to socials with your best mates, week in week out. It’s been great to see the club go from strength-to-strength in my time here and I think where we’re at currently is a realisation of the potential we have as a group of boys.

“I’d say winning the league this year with GURFC and getting to this final are definitely up there as career highlights for me.”

Edinburgh will be a tough test for Glasgow, but fourth year Mechanical Engineering student Jonny and his team will be giving it everything they have.

“We knew we had a strong team going into the season and from the outset our aims were very clear, we wanted to win the league and the cup,” he explained.

“It hasn’t all gone exactly to plan along the way but we’ve completed one of the aims so far and Wednesday is about going out to complete the other.

“The standard of university rugby is definitely underestimated, especially in Scotland. Having played a lot of senior club rugby I don’t see much of a difference, a lot of uni boys have come from successful school teams so the talent is definitely there, and the will to play exciting rugby is there in abundance, perhaps even more so than in club rugby.

“I was fortunate enough to be selected to play for Scottish Students against the under-19s at the end of February, and the positive result of that game definitely showed the standard of university rugby in Scotland.”
