Hawks head off Sonians

With 5 changes and 1 positional change due to injuries, Hawks 2s took on their counterparts from Watsonians at Old Anniesland. The weather was again ideal from rugby with a breeze blowing across the pitch and slightly favouring Watsonians in the first half.

It was the visitors who opened the scoring after 3 minutes. Hawks Seconds conceded a penalty in front of their posts. The kick was successful by Watsonians number 10. Hawks 2s 0 - 3 Watsonians 2s.

From the restart, Hawks Seconds put Watsonians under pressure, which lead them to conceding a penalty inside their 22. The seconds won the scrum and pushed their opponents backwards. Peter Redmayne picked the ball up from the base of the scrum and dived over to score the first of Hawks 3 tries in the 8th minute. Stephen Gillies was successful with the conversion to make the score Hawks 2s 7 - 3 Watsonians 2s.

Both sides then had opportunity to add to their scores, but the final passes going to ground. However, in the 30th minute Watsonians managed to get quick ball from a ruck inside Hawks 2s 22. The final pass went to hand and Watsonians Number 11 scored a try in the corner. The conversion was unsuccessful. There was no more scoring and the half ended Hawks 2s 7 - 8 Watsonians 2s.

Hawks 2s took control of the game from the whistle. Their hard work was rewarded when Watsonians conceded a penalty in the 46th minute. Stephen Gillies was successful with the kick to make the score Hawks 2s 10 - 8 Watsonians.

Hawks 2s then handed the initiative back to Watsonians by conceding a penalty in front of their posts in the 48th minute. Watsonians number 10 was successful with the kick to make the score Hawks 2s 10 - 11 Watsonians 2s.

6 minutes later, after a passage of sustained pressure, Hawks 2s scored a try. Robert Beattie had moved from Centre to Wing Forward due to injury to Peter Redmayne. From a scrum about 35 minutes from Watsonians line, Beattie collected a loose ball from the scrum and ran through and round a number of defenders to score in the corner. Stephen Gillies was successful with the conversion to make the score Hawks 2s 17 - 11 Watsonians 2s.

Watsonians were not finished and from the restart put Hawks on the back foot. This resulted in the Watsonians number 5 scoring their second try in the 62nd minute. The conversion was unsuccessful. Hawks 2s 17 - 16 Watsonians 2s.

It was not long until Hawks extended their lead when in the 64th minute Robert McKinstray scored a try under the posts. The conversion was successful by Stephen Gillies. Hawks 2s 24 - 16 Watsonians 2s.

From the restart, Watsonians put Hawks under pressure and the Watsonians number 15 scored a try in the corner. The conversion was missed. Hawks 2s 24 - 21 Watsonians 2s.

There was no more scoring as both teams made a number of mistakes in the final 10 minutes. Hawks 2s eventually holding on to win their 4th league game in a row. The Final Score Hawks 2s 24 - 21 Watsonians 2s
