The Anniesland derby had been anticipated since the fixtures had been announced but as both sides had got off to a flying start and went into the tie neck and neck even at this early stage of the season. A solitary bonus point separated them at kick off and the game seemed too close to call.
Accies had opened the season with a 62 point hammering of Kilmarnock but GHK had managed too impressive 5 point wins against Carrick and Allan Glen’s gave the Old Anniesland a slight edge.
Whilst there was an expectation that the match would be tight GHK had Accies on the back foot from the start of the match. In early exchanges Accies only real opportunity fell to Chris Jubb who broke down the line but was easily isolated by the GHK cover.
The main tale in the first half was the dominant GHK pack which was all over Accies in set piece, tight and loose. This gave GHK a fantastic platform and they were launching attacks all over the pitch.
In about 10 minutes Gregor Hollerin seemed certain to finish but was deemed to have put a foot into touch.
Despite the overwhelming pressure it took 17 minutes for Scott Robertson to take a pot at goal with a 40 metre penalty. As the ball narrowly passed the left post Accies knocked the ball in the in-goal area, conceding a 5 metre scrum and putting themselves under pressure.
From the scrum GHK came close to scoring with Mike Aird picking up from the base of the scrum. He put a quick pass to Mike Martin who put a pass to Hollerin which was unfortunately knocked out to let Accies off the hook.
Accies started to force their way into the game and came close to scoring on their first proper foray forward in 20 minutes with Ross Cowan and Chris Rhodes combining wide just failing with an acrobatic one-handed pass.
When GHK eventually opened the scoring in 31 minutes, it was the least they deserved. They had worked through their way deep into the Accies 22 winning a scrum. The solid base had Aird pick up and pass to centre, Jamie Fleming, who was supported by Mike Borthwick. The ball was recycled close to the line when Robertson went across or the 5 points. (5-0)
Immediately after the kick-off GHK conceded a penalty on their own 22 and Stuart Gray slotted over with a measured ease Accies were right back in the match with 5 minutes until half-time. (5-3)
Half-time had the score close despite GHK’s dominance in possession and territory throughout the first period. But Accies had a lot more of the play and seemed to have grabbed their good fortune in not being further behind.
Rhodes and Brad Bell had combined to take the ball 80 metres out of defence and threaten the GHK line for the first time and it wasn’t long before they were pressuring their rivals.
In 52 minutes prop, Takuira Mitai took the ball on the left wing. With pace that that seemed to belie his physique he sprinted down the line before going over for 5 points which gave Accies the lead. (5-8)
Five minutes later, left wing, Jubb, rounded off an individual effort with a second try and it looked as if the home side would regret their failure to push their first half advantage home. (5-13)
GHK awoke from their second half torpor when Robertson slotted over a penalty in 62 minutes. This brought GHK back within touching distance. (8-13)
Robertson missed another a couple of minutes later, but the momentum had swung back to GHK.
The pack had Accies back under the pressure they had struggled with in the first half but the tying try came as a result of a heads up play by Davy Fleming. The ball was bobbling forward and the centre touched down under the posts allowing Robertson to put GHK back into the lead with the conversion. (15-13)
Whilst, there was still 10 minutes on the clock GHK were definitely in the driving seat. Putting the Accies under pressure Struan Gray broke cover in midfield. He put a pass out to James Kinane who stepped inside switching the point of attack. He then released the ball to Hollerin who finished wuth the try. (20-13)
Accies chance of leaving with a bonus point took a blow when their skipper Bell was yellow carded in the closing minutes. But the men from New Anniesland had to leave empty handed when Robertson widened the gap to ten points in time added on. (23-13)
Bragging rights went to GHK but with Carrick putting 101 on Annan and going top of the league with another 5 points, both Anniesland clubs will be looking towards Maybole for the real challenge this season.
