Matt Vallance in Scotland on Sunday

MELROSE emerged victorious from a roller-coaster game in Glasgow, edging it 10-6.
When referee Duncan McClement allowed play to flow, there was good entertainment; however, the official’s over-fussy approach, particularly at scrums, went against entertaining rugby.
In 23 minutes, Joe Helps kicked the visitors in front with a penalty. Ten minutes later, he kicked the extras after a good spell of Melrose pressure was rewarded by an Andrew Nagle try.
The second half was more of the same, with Hawks opening their account through a Gregor Hunter penalty goal, scant reward for their inventive play in the lead-up.
To be fair, both sides put together good passages of play thereafter, but, always a handling error would halt proceedings and we would have more indication of the referee’s bemusement at the scrums.
With three minutes left, Hunter kicked a second penalty for the Glasgow side, to at least guarantee them a losing bonus point. Their efforts to win the game saw them camped in the Rose 22, before the visitors broke out, and in almost the final action, Melrose hooker George Turner broke away, but the thrust failed on a lack of support and time ran out.
