Gala brought to an end a debilitating run of defeats with a well earned win over Glasgow Hawks at Netherdale to reinvigorate a passion for the game in the Borders town.
The Maroons might have won by considerably more had they had a reliable goal kicker. Ruairi Howarth, who otherwise had a sound game, missed three shots in front of the posts until he was relieved of kicking duties.
Fortunately for home support Gala were able to score tries, two of them by Edinburgh professional Alan Dell from driven lineouts in the first half that gave the Maroons a 10-7 interval advantage, Hawks’ points having come from a try by lock Andy Linton and the conversion by wing Pierre Mounal.
A try by Graham Speirs and the conversion by Keith Young and then a Frankie Robson touchdown extended Gala’s lead to 22-7 before a try and conversion by Mournal brought Hawks back into the game.
