Poor end to League campaign

Muir end play off hopes

Boroughmuir 35 Glasgow Hawks 14
Hawks final league game of the season proved to one of the largest defeats of an otherwise fairly successful season. With 4 players on Scotland under 20 duty, Paddy Boyer resting a slight injury before the Club International next week and a number of players injury the visit to a wet, windy and muddy Meggatland proved to be too much for the remaining players. The result wasn’t helped by a string of mistakes, shaky defence and lineout and conceding far too many penalties.
Hawks started brightly enough but 2 missed penalties to touch allowed the hosts the run the ball back at the Hawks defence. This gave Boroughmuir great confidence that they built on as the half progressed. Their short passing among the backs and forwards and excellent tactical kicking with the wind behind them turned the Hawks back over and over again. The net result was that they scored three converted tries by half time leaving Hawks with a mountain to climb after the break.
The Boroughmuir no.8 was having an excellent game with numerous breaks from the base of the scrum having been given far too much room to move. This helped their backs to gain a vast amount of space that increasingly became difficult to defend. Hawks had a reasonable amount of ball but too often it was spilled or turned over before they could capitalise from it.
The second half started brightly for Hawks as they laid siege to the line but once again a penalty denied them a score. Boroughmuir used this escape to regain a foothold in the Hawks half. Again they breached the Hawks defence when their prop ran in for another converted try.
To be fair Hawks improved in the final quarter and deservedly scored when Patrick Kelly made a beautiful break and roared in from 30 metres for a try converted by Gregor Hunter.
Boroughmuir bounced back from this set back to score a further converted try. To bring the score to 35-7. Hawks did not give up and Andy Hill barged over for the final try and a bit of respectability. Pierre Mounal converted before the referee blew for the end of a disappointing performance by Hawks.
The coaches have much to work on during the week if Hawks are to beat GHA in the cup and keep their season alive.
