Jason Baggott has stated he “really happy” after the stand-off signed his first professional deal with Edinburgh Rugby.

The South African-born stand-off, who is a member of the BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy and plays for Melrose in the BT Premiership, will join the club in the summer on a one year deal.

And 22-year-old hooker Cameron Fenton has extended his stay with the club for a further year.

Baggott, 22, has been enrolled in the BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy since arriving at Melrose from South African outfit the Southern Kings in July 2015.

“I am really happy to have signed my first professional deal with Edinburgh,” Baggott, who lifted the BT Scottish Cup with Melrose in 2016/2017, said.

“It’s an environment that I’m obviously familiar with, having trained with the squad throughout the season, and I’m excited to be a part of the club’s future moving forward.”

Edinburgh Head Coach Richard Cockerill said: “Jason is a young player who has impressed in both training and whilst playing for Melrose and we’re glad that he’s going to be a part of the club moving forward.”

Meanwhile, Fenton will be at the club until at least May 2019.

The Strathallan School product, who began his career with Howe of Fife, made his Edinburgh debut in the 37-10 Guinness PRO14 victory over Ospreys in November of last year.

Fenton has made nine appearances to date and he said: “I’m really happy to re-sign with Edinburgh. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club and I’m excited to push on and see what the future holds.”
