‘Hawks Onside’ Edition 4
Welcome to the fourth edition of ‘Hawks Onside’ for Season 2020-2021
October 2020
The time gap between editions is slightly shorter this time as the Committee felt that our loyal support should be kept up to date with current developments affecting the
Club game in Scotland.
By now you are probably aware that the Scottish Government has decreed that all rugby training in certain areas of Scotland must cease for a period of 17 days.
Unfortunately, we are in one of the affected areas.
The players were informed last Thursday and given individual training sheets to ensure
that they maintained their level of fitness.
At the same time the SRU confirmed that competitive rugby would now not start until
at least 31st December at the earliest.
This is all highly disappointing but probably inevitable. Disappointing for Hawks as great progress has been made in order to get a competitive squad on the field,
notably:
Training at the new training base at the Police ground at Lochinch in Pollok Park has
proved to be highly successful with excellent numbers attending.
At the last training session on Thursday 30 players were there for the Covid protocol
arranged session.
24 new players have been registered with the SRU and the total number of registered
players is now 85.
Three new coaches have been appointed to take responsibility for the 2nd XV (see
details in the article below)
The generosity of supporters has provided a financial cushion to cover the early
training costs.
Sponsors have generously provided certain elements of Hawks branded on field and
off field kit.
Glasgow Hawks AGM
This is a reminder that the AGM will take place by Zoom on Wednesday 21st October
at 1900 hours.
Members wishing to join in the meeting should phone the Secretary on 07702 204004
to request the access code.
To ensure that all information concerning the Club is up to date and ready for the AGM the Committee will hold a Zoom meeting on Monday 19th October. Committee meetings using Zoom have proved to be very useful as nobody has had to travel across
town to attend. This may prove to be the trend in future.
Kelvinside Hawks XV News
It’s ‘Back to the Future’ at Hawks with the announcement of our new three man Coaching Team for the reformed 2nd XV, Kelvinside Hawks who will play in the SRU
West Reserve League Division 1.
The coaching trio will reunite three former Hawks players who gave enormous service to the Club over many successful seasons – Chris Docherty, Mark Sitch and Liam
McIntyre the first two being past Captains.
From left. Liam Mcintyre, Chris Docherty, Mark Sitch
Chris Docherty was with Hawks at its inception in 1997 having played previously for GHK. He was a member of Glasgow’s Heineken Cup Squad in 2001/02 and captained
Hawks the same season. Chris later coached at Cartha/QP.
Mark Sitch moved to Hawks from Australia and played in the League and Cup winning side of 2003/2004 also playing for Warriors the same season. He was Premiership player of the year that year and captained the Club in 2007/2008. Mark went on to coach Allan Glens.
Liam McIntyre was also with Hawks in the early years playing as a very mobile prop and was a key member of the undefeated team in South Africa in the summer of 2003. He was integral to the League and Cup winning side of 2003/04 and later coached GHK
and Helensburgh.
Hawks Director of Rugby, Chas Afuakwah commented: “We are delighted to secure the services of Chris, Liam and Mark at Hawks. They bring with them a lot of experience and care passionately about the Club. I’m confident they will complement our existing coaching and backroom teams to provide a seamless delivery of the way we want to play rugby across our two XVs. We have been busy in the close season on a number of fronts including player recruitment, so to add these guys into the mix is
something we’re pretty excited about”.
Glasgow Hawks – The Irish Connection
The road between the west end of Glasgow and Ireland has been well trodden for over 140 years since Glasgow Accies first ventured there in 1873.
Our founder clubs GHK and Accies have had longstanding rivalries with the likes of North of Ireland and Instonians taking us back to the very opening of Ravenhill (now Kingspan Stadium) when the Champions of Scotland played the Champions of Ulster and in recent years Hawks matches against Malone, Belfast Harlequins and Ballynahinch.
Since the inception of Hawks the Club has benefited from a steady flow of top quality players from Ireland who have contributed greatly on and off the pitch.
Allen Clarke who was at one time in charge of the Ulster Academy used to phone for updates on his protégés like Glenn Telford and Ireland’s under 21 Captain Mike Rainey Gavin Walsh an Irish A Cap arrived at Hawks in years approaching the Millennium and made a huge impact especially on his debut against a very strong Currie pack. Alan Watt could vouch for that.
Hawks ventured to Sevens Tournaments at the likes of Carrickfergus.
Over the last decade Brendan Cullinane, Paul Henderson, Andy Linton and Stephen Leckey have put in a tremendous shift with Andy and Stephen taking on Captaincy duties.

If we’ve missed anyone you can blame Hugh Barrow!
This tradition continues with the signing of Jake Porter who joins us from Carrickfergus and has played for GHK and Cartha whilst studying in Glasgow.
An old adage runs “a well organised club is not always a successful club but a successful club is usually a well organised club” and a key platform of that is our Hon Secretary and here again Hawks are well served by Ireland in the shape of Mark “Jugs” McIlfatrick a son of Ulster, Viki Penpraze our Sports and Exercise Scientist who is based at Glasgow University and is key to the Squad preparations and Head Physio Stephen Rowan.
At a time like this having a good solid backroom team has never been more important.
A Word of Thanks
The appeal to members for funds to assist with the pre-season training costs has been well supported and the Club wish to thank the generous support given by members. This has ensured that, even at this most difficult time, the Club has been able to run successful and innovative training session that have attracted and retained players.
Thank you.
