In the beginning there was a Football Union

150 years ago on Monday 3rd March 1873 a meeting was held at 4.30 in the afternoon in Masters Common Room of the Glasgow Academy then situated on Elmbank St the building that later housed the Glasgow High School
This meeting was timed to follow the third International match a scoreless draw against England which was played earlier in the day at Hamilton Crescent Partick the home of West of Scotland Cricket Club where some three months earlier on 30th November 1872 the birth of International Soccer had taken place
This meeting saw the birth of the Scottish Football Union (renamed in 1924 as The Scottish Rugby Union) This was to be on a similar basis to the Rugby Union in England that had been formed in 1871 and Glasgow Academicals in common with other leading Scottish clubs had joined up
The three objects of the Scottish Football Union were simple
1 to provide funds for a Cup This however took over 120 years to implement
2 to bring into closer connection the clubs then playing
3 to form a committee by whom the Scotch International team might in the future be chosen
A provisional committee was established with representatives from Glasgow Accies,Edinburgh Accies,West of Scotland,Royal High School FP and Merchistonians
By 1873 one of Hawks two founder clubs Glasgow Academicals had been involved with the birth of both international Rugby and Soccer ,joined the Rugby Football Union, hosted the birth of the Inter City Match and now hosted the birth of the Scottish Rugby Union .

In 1886 they were also in attendance at the birth of the International Rugby Board now World Rugby when James Carrick a double internationalist rugby and cricket who set a world record of 419 not out for a first class innings represented Scotland

Ten days later on 13th March 1873 about a mile away another meeting took place in Bells Temperance Hotel Bridge St and the Scottish Football Association was born
Within a period of ten days in March 1873 Glasgow saw the birth of both of our “football” governing bodies
