Sunshine on Crieff

Gary Heatly reports on Strathearn 7s

There was sunshine on Crieff as Crieff & Strathearn Rugby Club hosted their annual sevens tournament at Braidhaugh.

On Saturday, the teams involved played out a series of round robin fixtures to decide the pool winners and then there was the knock-out phase with Glasgow Hawks eventually going on to win the Robin McNeil Trophy.

There with some excellent running rugby on display throughout the day as a lively crowd enjoyed the action and Alan Webster, the master of ceremonies, kept everyone up to date with goings on thanks to his usual enthusiastic commentary.

After the pool phase, the semi-finals saw Glasgow Hawks take on Dunfermline and Morrison’s Former Pupils faced up to Falkirk. Both matches were fiercely contested with Hawks and Morrison’s FPs progressing to the Cup final to play for the Robin McNeil Trophy.

Before the main final, Crieff played Arbroath in the Plate final.

The home side ran out winners thanks to tries from Jamie Pool, Euan Murray and the experienced Dave Lyle.

Outgoing captain George Davis had the honour of lifting his second piece of silverware this season with Crieff having already secured the Arnold Clark Caledonia Midlands Two 15-a-side trophy.

The Cup final proved to be a breathless encounter and Glasgow Hawks, captained by local Crieff man Ryan Flett, defended superbly and became the only team who were able to contain the elusive Morrison’s runners all day.

In a very close game, it was only towards the end that Glasgow Hawks’ Premiership credentials shone through to become the champions.

For Glasgow Hawks captain Ryan Flett the day could hardly have been more special. Not only did he lift his hometown sevens trophy, but he did so on his 30th birthday.

“My friends and family asked me what I wanted to do for my 30th and I said wanted to bring Glasgow Hawks to the Crieff and Strathearn Sevens and give it a crack and it ended up being a day to remember,” he said.

Crieff and Strathearn rugby club would like to thank all supporters who helped make the day such a success, especially Lindsays solicitors and estate agents for their generous sponsorship of the day.

Stephen O’Hare from Lindsays and Kenny McNeil and Jane Campbell, Robin McNeil's son and daughter, presented the Robin McNeil Trophy - named after the former club president who ran the event for over 20 years - to Flett at the end of the afternoon of action.

Meanwhile, Strathallan School have won the Boroughmuir Rugby under-18 sevens tournament for the third year in a row.

They won all three pool games at Meggetland in Edinburgh before beating the hosts in the final 24-7.

And, in a dramatic finish, former Strathallan pupil Logan Williams powered over the line to help New Zealand under-20s secure a memorable comeback victory against Australia.

The New Zealand youngsters rallied from behind to come out on top 34-29 in the first game of the Under-20 Rugby Championship at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha in South Africa.

Willliams had already made a great impact off the bench and, when the sides were tied at 29-29, he scored the clinching try.
