Hawks Finish Pre-Season with Ten-Try Victory

In their final warm-up match before the league campaign gets underway, Glasgow Hawks produced an impressive display at Old Anniesland, running out 64–24 winners over GHK RFC.

The scoreline reflected the difference in pace and power between the two sides, with Hawks crossing the GHK line ten times to their hosts' four. However, GHK deserve considerable credit for the way they approached the game. They never gave up and, despite the final margin, showed enough to suggest that they will be competitive on their return to the top division of the National League.

Hawks led 28–12 at half-time, having played with considerable pace and attacking intent. Their ability to move the ball quickly and maintain the tempo of the game continually stretched the GHK defence.

GHK, however, refused to be overawed and took advantage of several Hawks errors to keep the scoreboard moving. The home side's four tries were a reward for a spirited performance and ensured that the visitors could never afford to relax.

One of GHK's tries was particularly impressive and deserves special mention. Straight from the kick-off at the start of the second half, Hawks lost possession, and for the next two minutes GHK retained the ball, moving it confidently through both backs and forwards. Their patient and controlled build-up eventually created the opening for them to score in the left-hand corner. It was a superbly executed period of possession that gave GHK real encouragement for the second half, while also providing Hawks with an immediate wake-up call.

Ultimately, the major difference between the two sides was the power, pace and experience within the Hawks' attack. When Hawks secured good possession, their ability to accelerate the game and exploit gaps in the GHK defence proved decisive.

Hawks' ten tries were scored by Dan Casserly (3), Sebastian Hastings (3), Euan Muirhead, Gavin Cruikshank, Craig Nolan and James Couper. David McCartney added five conversions, with the remaining conversion credited to Freddie.

For Hawks, this was an excellent way to conclude their pre-season preparations. Ten tries and 64 points will provide plenty of encouragement as they now turn their attention to the serious business of the Premiership campaign.

For GHK, there were also positives to take from the afternoon. Their willingness to attack, coupled with their refusal to surrender despite the scoreboard, should stand them in good stead for the season ahead.
