Selkirk relegated

GLASGOW Hawks maintained their challenge for a Premiership play-off slot and relegated Selkirk in a match at Philiphaugh spoiled by a strong wind, writes Atholl Innes.

With the benefit of the gale, Hawks took the lead when Andy Hill drove over and Gregor Hunter converted.

Selkirk kept possession well and Nathan Fowles pulled three points back with a penalty. However, Hawks continued to dominate up front and referee Ross Mabon awarded a penalty try after a series of scrums and Hunter converted.

Hawks increased their lead to 19-3 in 31 minutes when Hill controlled the ball at the base of the scrum and touched down. Hunter hit the post with the conversion.

Selkirk kicked downwind on the restart and needed to judge the weight of the kicks. But it was Hawks who scored the fourth try and a bonus point when Brendan McGroarty broke with pace and Hunter converted.

Ross Nixon broke two tackles and Fowles converted, before Scott Hendrie got Selkirk’s third try to give them hope. But the home side struggled against Hawks’ defence and with four minutes left Grant Stewart scored and Jack Steele converted for
