Our Man at Nethercraigs
Al Graham reports
Glasgow Hawks 2nd XV v Glasgow Accies 2nd XV
Saturday 15th October
Nethercraigs
It is thought that this may be the first time, in the 25 years since the merger of Glasgow Accies and GHK, that Hawks may have played either of their two formation Clubs, in a competitive match at any level. This much anticipated game was played in exceptionally difficult overhead conditions with frequent blustery conditions that, fortunately, didn't affect the intensity of the play in a hard fought game by the two, previously unbeaten and high scoring sides.
With 20 minutes played and Hawks leading by 14-0 the penalty count exceeded the score with both sides standing looking at each other in a pose that could have been interpreted as waiting for an audition for a part in a Confused.Com advert. The sizeable number of spectators were none the wiser.
Accies playing, in the first half, against the stiff wind behind them, used the penalty count to take them into the 22 where their well controlled driving maul resulted in 4 tries and 3 conversions by half-time. And a try bonus.
Accies also played their part, and they too scored from a controlled rolling maul before releasing their French right-winger, Vincent Maugret, for a well worked try in the corner to keep their hopes alive.
Half-time 24-5.
The question at half-time was, would the Hawks have enough points on the board playing into the wind?
They need not have worried for in the very first minute a loose downfield kick by Accies was fielded close to the halfway line by fullback Euan Muirhead, and he set off on a mazy run like a cat with its tail on fire and didn't stop until he touched down over the try line. 31-5.
After that, Hawks controlled the remainder of the half with a claustrophobic defence to ensure that the opposition pacey backs could not penetrate.
This inspired the forwards and the speed and tempo of the game speeded up, and three more tries were the result, coming mainly from good handling by backs and forwards rather than rolling mauls.
Throughout the game, the one area where Accies were marginally on top was in the power of their set scrum but in the loose play Hawks were on top as a result of the strength of their tackling.
In the end fitness told. Hawks having the advantage of several players being in the FOSROC Academy and all training alongside their Premiership companions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
The back row of Andrew Syme, Jake Porter, and Daniel Sweeny was particularly impressive. All three have recent 1st team experience. Between them, they scored 4 of the 8 tries, 3 by Jake Porter and 1 by Daniel Sweeny. The other tries were scored by Centre Henry Lapslie, replacements Peter Duncan and debutant Wilhelm Carlson.
Jamie Thompson kicked 4 conversions.
Hawks 48 Glasgow Accies 5
